Condos in Brookside – Pick of the Week Meyer West Condominiums
While most condos and lofts are concentrated around the plaza and downtown areas, Brookside has two condominium developments, the Meyer West Condominiums and the Crestwood Condominiums. Today I viewed a condo in the Meyer West building in the heart of Brookside at the intersection of Meyer and Brookside Blvd. They are fairly nondescript inside, however the outside is anything but. The large, blue 1950’s modern high-rise building is positioned amongst the picturesque backdrop of tudors, brick and earth-toned homes – none rising more than 2 stories in height. Despite the incongruous mixture of architectural styles, I like Meyer West Condos and I have chosen to feature it as my pick of the week. Below are some photos I took there today.
When I was a kid, back in the dark ages, that place was kind of a big deal. The ground floor was mostly retail type businesses. I think there was a salon, a coffee shop, and maybe a retail outlet or two. I’ve always liked the look of the building.
Meyer West Condominiums is the ugliest, most obtrusive eyesore that ever ungraced the area and it completely ruins the feel of Brookside. I would not purchase in Brookside because of that building even though I love the rest of the neighborhood. The architect who designed it needs to have their license revoked!
I’ve had to look at that building almost everday for the past 30 years and I don’t understand why they’ve never changed the facade. It couldn’t be that expensive to change the panels. However, the units are nice and they are incredibly affordable for the area. Lack of amenities is a bummer though. Paint the Blue Goose already.
At least it is the color of the sky. I’m not sure I would be on board with changing the color – I’m afraid it would just look weird. No matter what is done to this building, it will always be a big high-rise in an area without them. AJ, yes, I agree totally – the units are nice and affordable. It is a good option for condo seekers who want to be in walking range of everything they need, plus it is on the bus route and the walking trail.
AJ,
they haven’t changed the facade of this building (“The Blue Goose”) because most all landlords are greedheads. They only want money out–they don’t want to put any more money in than they absolutely have to. Once in a while a property owner will be a rare case of investing wisely in their property but it is extremely rare, in spite of the benefits gained by the investor.

I have always loved this building! It’s one of KC’s best. Like a transplant from Chicago’s Gold Coast, or something.
Oh come on you guys. This is a great example of 1950’s architecture. To change this building would be criminal. So many people’s first instinct is to cover this building with stucco and beige! This is not Overland Park and should not be changed to look like a new building! I hope the residents of Brookside will eventually designate this classic beauty a contributing property in their historic district. It would help protect it from a shiny, new, FAKE, facade in the future. This is a great Featured Home post. Thanks!
[…] some lively discussion on the fate, design, and appreciation of the Meyer West Condominiums in my recent blog entry. Coincidentally, as I was checking the new listings in our local MLS system this week I saw that […]
[…] and I were on a walk in the neighborhood this afternoon, and we noticed that the venerable Meyer West Condominiums (aka the “Blue Goose”) located at 333 West Meyer Boulevard in Brookside could really benefit from a little exterior detail […]
You know there is still a beauty shop, a barber shop and a café in the ‘Blue Goose’ – 333 W Meyer Condo building. The Café Idéale introduced a new menu this summer. I’ve taken several people to try out the ‘hand-crafted artisan cuisine’ and we all enjoyed it! Mike, the HOA has discussed changing the facade of 333 but a final decision has not yet been reached. Did you know that this building created as much stir amongst architects in the 1950’s as the Blach addition to the Nelson created this decade?
But they should do upkeep, Mike. That’s all I’m saying
