What to Look For At the Brookside Farmer’s Market this Saturday & Chiefs on Sunday

Cooler nights are bringing change to our backyard gardens, but the veggies are still rolling in. August and September are the best months for eating local in KC, and you’d be silly to miss out on all of the fresh flavors. There should be an array of vegetables to choose from at the Brookside Farmer’s Market tomorrow 8:00a.m.-1:00p.m.(Septmber 7, 2013); here is a sampling of what you might see:

  • Peppers – eat now.
  • Onions – eat now or store.
  • Potatoes – eat now or store in a cool humid place.
  • Okra – eat or slice and freeze to throw in your jambalayas later.
  • Tomatoes – eat or preserve/freeze sauces and salsas. I froze a few jars of my homemade salsa.
  • Apples – I haven’t seen any yet, but they are probably starting to come in.
  • Green Beans – eat now. Keep in a ziploc in your refrigerator.
  • Herbs – eat or dry
  • Fall transplants such as broccoli and lettuce. It is a bit late in the season to plant them, but everything is late this year. Go ahead and buy them and plant them – as long as we don’t freeze early you should be ok.
  • Kale
  • Melons
  • Winter Squash – eat now or store. These have a great shelf life. Stock up and store them in your basement.
  • Sunflowers and Zinnias.
  • A farmer in Warsaw, Missouri told me that sweet corn was late this year so you may still see some ears at the markets.
  • Cucumbers – they like it hot so they will slow down soon.
