Hale Cook, A Neighborhood Elementary School is Proposed for Brookside

What it is: It is with great excitement that I share this news about the potential re-opening of Hale Cook Elementary School. If enough children enroll, this school, located at 7302 Pennsylvania, will open in the Fall of 2011. This school will be part of the Kansas City Missouri School District, and would service children in the Brookside and Waldo areas along State Line. The vision is to make it a true neighborhood school where the children will all live near each other and can actually walk to school together; no expensive busing will be needed and there will be a real sense of community. I think this is just what the doctor ordered. Having grown up in Kentucky with neighborhood schools, this school district has always baffled me with all of its specialty and charter schools, lottery systems, cross-town busing, and its accreditation woes. The vision for Hale Cook just makes sense.

Enrollment: In order for this school to open in the Fall 2011, they need sufficient enrollment by February 2011. You may register your child on their website.

Get Involved: If you support this project, be sure to share this information with relevant parents and community members within your network. You may also sign up to receive notifications of news and events on their website.

Upcoming Events: There will be a community “meetup” at Waldo Pizza on Sunday, December 5th. The meetup is a social event intended to get parents, neighbors, and community members together to generate some enthusiasm for the movement. You may also attend an open house at the school on December 12th. More details can be found on their news and events page.
